MADISON - The human brain develops from an embryonic state and takes approximately 10 years to reach its full size and complexity. A new report by researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) has combined published reports from neuroscience research over the last century, providing an outline of the brain as it develops during the first 10 years of life. "The changes in brain anatomy reported over the years have the potential to provide a blueprint for future researchers to better understand the molecular and cellular changes that control brain development," said Linda Wilmes, Ph.D., an associate professor at MCW. "By looking at these changes, we hope to be able to better understand brain disorders such as epilepsy, autism, and schizophrenia." According to the report, the brain is formed from an embryonic state when the last cells of the neural tube fuse together. The brain then begins to develop along two distinct lines, the anterior and posterior. When the cerebrum is forming, the brain's lateral ventricles form to allow for the exchange of fluids that bathe the developing brain. The corpus callosum, or commissura, allows for the passage of information between the left and right cerebral hemispheres and eventually, a split will divide the corpus callosum in half to allow for the development of two distinct hemispheres. In the report, the authors provide a timeline to illustrate the maturation of the brain. The work was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. The study authors also hope to examine the role of nutrition and the timing of when we eat during development.
